  aww. You can forgive a LOT when you see all that cuteness bundled into a bed. Mostly when I get Paddy in the mornings (if he has slept well) he smiles, his eyes light up and he starts waving his arms up and down (Danger! Bill Robinson! style) with glee. It’s so adorable.

  Can You Tell Me?

  These words, can you tell me, are Finn’s current favourites. I think he uses it sometimes when he hasn’t really heard the question and sometimes when he just doesn’t want to think about the answer.

  Quite aside from that he asks so sweetly that it is terribly cute and all too easy to just tell him.

  the twinkle has graduated from sleeping in her moses basket in her cot, to sleeping in the cot itself. in the morning when i get the wake-up call via the baby monitor i go into her room and find her looking like this:
  

  and my heart melts with the cuteness of it every time and i forgive her for crying for hours the night before or for getting me up at 5am.

  It’s a mess. Here i Norway it really is.
  I get money from the State, becouse B do not have a dad. But I do not get extra child *something* that every singel mother does, becouse Im married whit L. But L do not get any extra money, becouse she is not B’s parent.. And she does not get leave from her work, like every other parent in these contry.
  And I have to meet on a office to sign a paper that says that B do not have a dad. And then we can apply for L to adopt B. But before we get that done, the child welfare has to come to visit us twice, to see that L is a good mother. :/

  When a little bit means an awful lot

  Yesterday afternoon I pushed my car key into the lock on my car boot and turned it (as I have done hundreds of times before). Picture my surprise then when the key snapped off in my hand. It took a moment before I realised that the severed section of the key was now buried in the mechanism of the lock. I have to say that I find an experience like this quite character-building. Not only did I find myself with a mutilated key but I am now the proud owner of a car boot lock with a small piece of metal buried deep in the lock mechanism. Two things saved the day from turning into complete disaster. The first was that a friend pointed out that there is a boot release lever next to the driver’s seat. (I knew this deep down but I’ve never been in the habit of using it). The second is that I always carry a back up car key so, even though my key was mutilated, I could use the back up key to start the ignition.

  The Squeak

  In the beginning there was a beep but we couldn’t work out where it came from. It was soft and and only happened every fifteen or perhaps thirty seconds. For the life of both of us we couldn’t work out what was making this noise.

  Then it dawned on Nicky (who is terribly clever at both the best and worst of times) that the beep was actually a squeak. This was not the same squeak as you might hear from a tent. This squeak was the metal wheel in a meter box turning around (which seems so obvious now Nicky has worked it out).

  It might be simply solved with a little oil.

  Lesson for the day - it’s the little things that can really bend your brain.

  I have been listening to Crowded House - Time on Earth although perhaps a little too much so I am kind of sick of it. I have also been treating myself to a bit of Oasis (What’s The Story Morning Glory), She Will Have Her Way and Belle and Sebastian (The Life Pursuit).

  Lesson for the day - one of the nice things about the commute is getting time to listen to music.

  Lemons and Ironing

  We used to put a drop of an essential oil (so called because you can live your entire life without them) in the water we sprayed on clothes as we ironed them (because it made them smell all nice; I need at the best of times).

  I have long since lost track of where this wonderful orange oil is but as I put more water in the squirter I did notice the pile of lemons on the bench and wonder if a little lemon juice would help.

  But then I had doubts. Doubts about how the smell might change will the application of heat or time. Doubts about what it might do to the colours. Doubts that any harebrained ideas I have should be followed.

  So for now just plain water will do.

  Lesson for the day - be nice to your clothes but keep a cool head when using a hot iron.

  John’s in Mulwala tonight, just across the border in NSW, after working in Cohuna today. He’s off to Yarrawonga tomorrow then home again. James’ cousins Jake & Mia spent the afternoon with me today while Sally spent quite a few hours with Nan, who has been transferred from one hospital to Emergency at another hospital, where she’s still waiting to be admitted for an infection that is taking hold. Unfortunately we had to leave her with medical staff tonight but not family as there is only so much that we can do when Sally and I both have the children on our own (especially since Jake has been very sick and away from school all week). At times in the past two weeks we’ve tried taking the little ones in to the hospital at night and it just doesn’t help, and often hinders whatever we might need to get done. Nan was comfortable and on the way to being admitted for the night so we will get there to see her first thing tomorrow.

  Ignorance is bliss

  Last night I attended a lecture/seminar held at the premises of one of Melbourne’s major City law firms. A senior lecturer from the University of Melbourne Law School delivered a lecture giving an introduction to international humanitarian law and international criminal law. I have to admit that, prior to 6.30 last night, I was blissfully ignorant about both these areas of law. The lecture was followed by plenary discussion amongst the forty of so seminar attendees. I am now a little less ignorant than I was before. I discovered, for example, that when people talk about the Geneva Convention, they are usually referring to the fourth Geneva Convention governing treatment of prisoners of war. I’m so ignorant that I didn’t even know that there are three other Geneva Conventions covering other matters. Perhaps I shouldn’t be allowed out in public without a minder.
