Dar Williams by

I got an email from Amazon this morning trying to sell me stuff. Actually I get heaps of email from companies where I have shopped and they are quite good at pointing out things I might actually like. Today’s email was case in point, it told me about a new album from Dar Williams, The Promised Land, which I didn’t even know existed.
I checked on iTunes and it’s not up on their store yet. It’s probably just as well as this makes it easier for me to resist temptation. But even when it is available it will just have to wait for Christmas, my birthday, or perhaps a small present to myself for surviving the 2008 school year.
I might even give it a proper listen if I have to wait for it.
Which brings me to an older idea. Twenty years ago it took me weeks to save for a new record (they were twenty-something dollars then). This meant that each disc was a big deal and it got some serious and sustained listening. By the time I was twenty-three I only had about a dozen albums in any format and I knew each one in and out.
Jumping forward to 2008, I have over 5,000 songs in iTunes alone. And I have discs I have never bothered to rip into iTunes. I love having so much music but sadly I appreciate every disc much less than I used to. I am not saying that I want to go back to that time of musical scarcity but I’d like to appreciate the riches I have a little more.
Lesson for the day - now that I’ve written this very thoughtful blog entry perhaps I should treat myself to the new Dar album.
