Since Lola’s demise we have been chook-less and not liking it one bit so we were very pleased that Finn’s Christmas gift from Grandma was two bantams who came via my brother, Rob, and sister-in-law, Kate. Rob and Kate have their own flock on their farm at the rear end of nowhere and gave us two girls to call our own.
Finn named these girls Winifred (he actually said ‘Wilfred’ to begin with, but Winifred stuck) and Timothy and they settled in beautifully. They began laying 24 hours after arriving and had been keeping us well supplied since. Well, until recently, that is.
We had an unfortunate mishap on Wednesday when Emmylou pushed past me into the chooks’ yard. As I was trying to grab her Indi came through the open gate, grabbed Timothy and took off with her. By the time Em was secured and I could turn my attention to Indi, Timothy was no more. So we found ourselves again with a lone chook.
We couldn’t let that situation continue so today we went in search of new chookies to keep Winifred company. My trainer Antonio suggested that we go to the Vic Market and he was on the money. There were some people there selling ducks, big chooks and bantams - all looking to be in excellent condition.
We opted for one full grown bantam and two young ones to join Winifred. Finn has named the full grown one Billie and the young ones are Lovely and Cuddly - it’s not clear which is which. These new girls are now ensconced with Winifred in the chook house until tomorrow morning so that they learn where they should roost.
I’m hoping (and fairly optimistic) that the new girls will settle in well with Winifred and we’ll have a happy little flock. We’ll have a fair few eggs but, given that 1 normal chook egg is about equivalent to 2 bantam eggs, it shouldn’t be too hard to use them up. And the dogs will be kept well away from them.
