Last night I finished P D James’ novel Children of Men. As the story went on, I noticed how different it was from the film it inspired. It is a smaller story and goes deeper into the character of Theo and the nature of the dictatorship of his cousin Xan. The story is different and, especially towards the end of the book, having seen the film didn’t help me guess the ending at all.
In fact, the ending was a surprise and threw a whole new light on the whole story. Even better, this surprise was as believable as it was sudden.
This is not an exciting book or much of a page turner, but it is interesting and, looking back, I am really glad that I persisted with it.
