For the second half of August Broad is touring right across this big brown beautiful and mysterious land we cally Strallya and I am sorry to say that this year we won’t be going.

This is a great pity because it is ace. Actually it is beyond ace, it is inspired.

Happily by the time Broad 2008 rolls around Leila and Finn will be at better ages to be easily babysat so I am sure we’ll be there (quite possibly with bells on).

I look so damn happy by gallagher_krista

It is all too easy to think of things in opposites and so often this binary thinking seems to work. If you want something to be right then fix what is wrong and so forth.

Now I am not suggesting throwing this out completely.

But sometimes I suspect is just doesn’t work. For example I don’t know that being happy is just the absence of problems or the absence of being miserable. Rather than knocking down the problems I wonder if it wouldn’t be better putting our energies simply into being happy.

Lesson for the day - keep your eye on the goal not the obstacle.

I am very sorry to say that when I see Finn of an evening I have a fair bit to get done and I raise my voice with him which makes me feel fairly horrible and probably doesn’t cheer him up any either. The solution is for me to manage my time a bit better and make an effort to maintain my calm.

I also thought it might be nice for us boys to have some dedicated boy time so I have booked a little cabin for Saturday night and we are off for an adventure together overnight. Hopefully he will enjoy spending the time with me. I know I am looking forward to spending some completely non-productive time letting him just be a kid at his own pace (and without me hollering at him).

As something of a bonus Fig and Danny are able to come with us with should add to Finn’s fun by a factor of about two hundred.

Lesson for the day - sometimes you need to break your patterns to break some patterns.

One of the things I have to get my head around this term is producing the necessary paperwork for full registration as a teacher. I don’t think any of it is too taxing mentally and it probably only amounts to fifteen or twenty hours work.

All the same I have been diligently ignoring it all year and, sooner or later, that has to change.

I might try to work out a plan of attack this week on this baby.

Lesson for the day - I can understand why they need to check all of this but it is still a drag to do.

I am trying to connect the school’s hard disk video camera to my school windows laptop and I am quite certain that it can be achieved. Last time a clever year nine kid solved the problem with me but I didn’t see how.

This time I am all on my own and utterly stumped. And I feel both.

Rush Hour by Bihari No.1

In the small hours I woke up to let a dog outside and then back in. In the minutes that followed before I lost consciousness again I resolved to get up as soon as the six AM alarm went off. There would be no more of this rushing around in the morning and, if all went well, I could record today’s podcast.

I maintain this was a good plan.

So when I lazily rolled over and checked the time I was a little surprised to find that it was six-forty already. That made it a choice between creating a podcast and having a shower.

Lesson for the day - students and staff noses are more important than my five listener’s ears.

I half expected that Nicky would finish the final Harry Potter before she went to bed last night. If I had a brain at all I would have fully expected it; I think she got to bed at around two.

Exploring… by jocieposse

Our back yard is lovely and rustic but it is not the kind of yard where you can actually get lost or hide away at all which is fine generally. However now that Finn is fully mobile and curious I am eager to get him out and exploring the slightly less tame corners of our word.

The creek at the end of our street has rocks that need climbing over. There are pockets of trees to be explored and climbed. And, only a short drive away, the coastal park mild wilderness in large quantities. So my resolution is that when the weather looks up I’m going to make an effort to get him out and exploring.

Lesson for the day - take is easy, take it slow.

This morning I went to Target and got us a copy of this final Harry Potter book. I would really like to read it before the ending becomes common knowledge and is spoiled for me. Having said that I have to be realistic about how fast news travels, how slowly I read and how much time I have to read.

Snape by Kittyzilla

When I first read The Half Blood Prince I thought that Snape had turned to the dark side and it seemed a real surprise. I always thought the great value of Snape as a character was that he might bitter and hard to like but that didn’t make him a bad or evil person.

So it seems strange that he was bad after all.

Then Danya explained her theory of my Snape was acting for the white hats right through the final chapters of the book. As soon as she explained it then it made sense. He was saving a young boy from committing murder. He was killing someone who was going to die there and then anyway. He was getting close to Voldemort so he could finish him off.

So while I didn’t think of it I do think it makes perfect sense. And tomorrow the final book comes out and soon enough I’ll know.

Lesson for the day - not every man in black is all about the cash.

Although I generally keep my distance from social networking sites liked MySpace I quite like Facebook. I can’t say it is changing my life but it does seem professionally constructed and it does enable me to connect a little more with people than I otherwise manage.

This morning, thanks to Eilis, I now know that you can even play Scrabble against people on Facebook which is kind of groovy. Admittedly playing online, and with the spare braincells I have, a game will take weeks but that’s better than no game at all.

Sabena Timetable 2001 - A by Sabenien

I happened to check my calendar on the intranet and discovered that I am teaching the classes I expect to this term but just not in all the sessions and rooms I was expecting. This is no kind of complaint. It is nice to have it mixed up a bit, I lose the double English on Friday afternoon and that is a blessing. And my two session on Tuesday are now my first two. All in all it seems quite good.

I guess our dogs have never heard a rooster start at half past five in the morning. Happily it was something they were prepared to take lying down. Lying down but sadly not shutting up. So I was up early this morning.

Added into the mix some of our less considerate neighbours had a party and played classic hits louder than anyone ever should until the small hours. Perhaps because of this Leila woke up far more often that she should have. This gave Nicky and I a late night and Nicky a broken night as well.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix midnight movie release 005 by Summer23

On Thursday we went to see the latest Harry Potter flick, the Order of the Phoenix, and yet again I loved it. I must confess that I find the more recent books a bit too introspective and brooding for my liking however this films version is terse, vivid and spectacular.

I’d go again.

Lesson for the day - it’s great to see a big budget movie that doesn’t disappoint.

Spiderman 3 filming preparation by bnittoli

I did my first work for term three this morning while Leila was having her nap. I didn’t actually plan anything as such but I did set-up the documents for each week and for the overall planning for each subject. I even went to far as to paste the curriculum for each subject into said documents.

Of course breaking it all apart into activities, assessments and in some kind of sequence is a much larger task. However since my aim was to do very little work these holidays I am quite fine with what I did today.

Lesson for the day - a little something is quite nice of a morning.

Monsters Inc by MarkOMeara

Today we went to the exhibition of Pixar stuff in the city and it was quite interesting although probably more so for adults than kids. I think Finn liked seeing McQueen and Nemo but in a era where many images can be easily called up on the computer he is not old enough to appreciate that we were looking at genuine conceptual artworks.

However Nicky and I found it quite interesting. In particular there are a series of images like storyboards which define the colour palate for each scene and, in total, the whole film. For a film you are familiar with, like Monsters Inc, it seems obvious now that the film is made but you can easily imagine how defining the various palates defines much of the film.

So if you are a grown-up who enjoys a few Pixar flicks then I highly recommend this. If you are a kid then I probably recommend ScienceWorks instead.

Lesson for the day - while the movies are entertaining for kids and adults the same cannot be said about every single thing to do with them.

LOST: Holy Grail by jaqian

On our way back from our day with the trains we stopped at McDonalds to use their toilets, eat some food, and for Finn to play on their playground.

I was sitting by the door and every now and then he appeared at the bottom of a slide or something. Then I realised it had been a while since I’d seen him. So I went in and called out to him.

Nothing.

So I called again and heard a faint voice. The faint Finn-like-voice said he was stuck and needed help. So I squeezed myself through an entrance and slowly made my way up three levels of play maze. I thought I was at the top but the little voice was quite close now but still above me.

So I found a way up, collected said child, and together we squeezed our way through various little opening and to the outside world.

It’s wasn’t very daring but it was a necessary rescue all the same.

Lesson for the day - it’s a lot smaller in those places than I had imagined it was.

Train at Queenscliff by naz’s stuff

Later this morning Finn and I are off to Queenscliff to see some steam engines and even go for a train ride. Happily there are many trains in the Thomas universe and many trains at Queenscliff and, based on the resemblance of some, they are running a friends of Thomas day. Hopefully Finn will love it.

The weather forecast is not promising but who needs sunshine when you’ve got trains?

The plan today was for us to all go to the museum after a minor trip to the doctor. The first thing that slowed us down as me needing a little nap because I am in most fashions a complete nanna. Once I finally awoke it was pouring rain which made a family excursion seem like less fun.

So instead we opted for a day at home which has been just right for a sleepy rainy kind of day.

I was down at the shop and decided it was as good a time as any to check my old lottery ticket and buy another ten week ticket. I have no expectation of winning but for three bucks fifty each week it entitled me to dream of stupid amounts of money for no actual effort.

So it should go without saying that I was a bit surprised to find that I had won $60 on my old ticket. I hope the money doesn’t change me. Having said that if I have to choose between the old me and all that cash then I still choose the $60.

Today I took Finn off for his routine hearing test which I don’t mind doing in the slightest. His attention can be a little short lived but that’s to be expected since he is only three.

His ears are a bit blocked, which is hardly surprising since we have all been beset by snot recently, which made him more deaf than normal. Intellectually I know that Finn’s hearing problems are relatively minor on the deafness scale and tiny on the scale of possible human suffering. However this knowledge doesn’t stop my heart breaking a little each time I am confronted with just how little he hears at times like this. I am not sure I can explain it beyond that but I feel it very strongly.

Of course with hearing aids he’ll be fine and he has a family that loves him to bits (and then some). All the same I sometimes wish for the hearing fairy to appear.

Lesson for the day - the world doesn’t always work the way I’d like it to.

I set a bunch of movies to tape off Foxtel and finally managed to actually watch one which was Must Love Dogs. I had heard some place, I have no idea where I hear about films these days, that it was underwhelming and I’d have to agree.

There are many things that Nicky and I are quite good at however actually getting a car serviced does not make this list very often.

Today a man came out to service both cars. One was serviced about a year ago and the other perhaps two or three years ago.

I should not have been a shock that the cost of making them both go properly could buy you Adelaide in a slow market.

The Long Neglected New Albums

I was just listening to the new Crowded House disc while I was washing the dishes and so far I like it. It is quite different to the last one but then it’s been over ten years and every Crowded House album has been quite different to the one before.

It got me to thinking that having an iPod should, it seems, make me open to new music because I can just load it up with everything else. However in a relatively open market, when many albums are all easy to listen to, I revert to the favourites. I was especially aware that there is a new Paul Kelly disc coming out soon and I have only listened to the last one about three times.

With this in mind I have loaded up my Nano with only the following, acquired but neglected, albums (and I am finding and loading them as I type this list).

Nicky had her haircut today and she looks especially lovely now. It has a proper name, jaw length layered bob, but this does no justice to just how pretty she looks.

I could have taken a photo and shared it but Nicky is notoriously shy of such things. You’ll just have to take my word for it.

Lesson for the day - grooming is well spent on the already beautiful.
